Event DescriptionThere are two divisions of this event: U.S. Extemporaneous, and International Extemporaneous Speaking. In United States Extemporaneous Speaking (USX), students are presented with a choice of three questions related to current events in the U.S. and, in 30 minutes, prepare a seven-minute speech answering the selected question. Students may consult articles and evidence they gather prior to the contest, and some tournaments allow students to use the internet during preparation time. Topics range from political matters to economic concerns to U.S. foreign policy. The speech is delivered from memory. International Extemporaneous (IX) is identical to the above, except the topics may range from country-specific issues to regional concerns to foreign policy. EVENT TIMESDraw time will be designated in order of listing in the flight. Preparation time is 30 minutes from the time of draw. Performance time limit, inclusive of introduction, is 7 minutes with a 30 second “grace period”. Should the performer go beyond the grace period they may not be ranked 1st. | Current TopicsThe topics in the link were submitted by Colton Gilbert for use in the upcoming fall 2024 tournaments.
